What is this ...?

AirBnB is a web-site for renting out spare rooms (or even whole homes) to visitors such as holiday-makers. 'Staying With Art' is an independent directory that helps you find AirBnB hosts who are active in the arts.

So ... how does this work?

We don't do bookings. AirBnB does that. All we do here is give you a link to the AirBnB pages. The rest is up to you. The Directory is ordered alphabetically by country and town. Each host describes their involvement in the arts. There is a list of keywords at the bottom.

Who can be listed here?

Well, this is a directory of AirBnB hosts who are actively engaged in the creative arts. For example, writers, painters, actors, dancers, jewelry makers, potters, ceramicists, filmmakers, songwriters, musicians, curators, designers, ... I accept hosts from all countries, languages, religions, politics, genders, orientations, and so on. Exclusions are very simple: (a) I don't accept non-AirBnB hosts at present. (b) I do not accept hosts who merely 'like' the arts, or who live in an 'inspiring' place, or whose property is near to a museum. The intention is that the host is actively creative, or is active in supporting creatives (for example, gallery owners). (c) Nothing illegal, nothing anti-social such as spamming or repeated bad reviews on AirBnB is allowed. There is a preference for hosts who will have frequent contact with the guest, which usually means the host is renting out a room in his or her own home. But there are exceptions, so I do not automatically exclude hosts who have multiple properties or who have no contact with guests.

This directory is part of AirBnB? ... or not?

Not. This is an independent project organised by Peter B. Lloyd in London, England. It has nothing to do with AirBnB Inc. (except, obviously, that everybody here is an AirBnB host!). The aim is simply to help prospective guests find hosts who are creatives. Why? Because it's more interesting for the guest, more interesting for the host, and provides the creative with some extra income so they can focus on being creative, which is often not a very lucrative vocation.

We won drama awards for the plays we performed. We live in the house designed by my mother, the sculptor Eliana Molinelli when she was chosen to create the center sculptured wall at the heart of Plaza Independencia, the most important public green area in downtown Mendoza. She was a well known Argentinian artist with a huge artistic legacy. She was a metal welder and she transformed the toughest pieces of metal into moving and expressive pieces of art. It could be great to get in touch with drama players and directors not only to get to know what each one of us can add as artist hosts to the airb&b experience, but also to eventually have plays performed in other places and countries as a result of an artistic bond.

The column headed "Name" is the name of the host and it links to the host profile on AirBnB. From the host profile you can follow links to the hosts active property or properties.

The column headed "Contact" indicates the level of contact that the host normally has with the guest. The five levels are: None (i.e. someone else handles the property); Minimal (e.g. meet & greet only); Occasional (e.g. the host lives in the same building or next door but does not share a living space); Frequent (e.g. the host shares the living space); Structured (e.g. the host offers art classes). You should check before booking whether the host will be there, because hosts may sometimes be travelling away from home.

To help find hosts with particular interests, each entry should begin with keywords.

• All primary keywords are used gender-neutrally - for men, women, and non-binary-gendered. Gender-specific keywords such as 'actress' and 'cameraman' are used where this is the artistes's preference.)
• Qualfiying terms are given in brackets, such as: Artist (Conceptual), Artist (Performance), Artist (Visual), Designer (Fashion), Designer (Dimensional), Designer (Graphic), Designer (Interior), Painter (Acrylics), Painter (Murals), Painter (Oils), Painter (Watercolours), Sculptor (Food).
• Where a keyword has a mundane use as well as an artistic use, it is the artistic one that is used here: so a 'Painter' is not a house-painter but some who uses paint as an expressive medium (which, of course, includes mural painters); a 'Makeup Artist' is someone working backstage in theatre or film production; an 'Organiser' holds arts events.
• Some distinctions are rather subtle, such as a video artist, video maker, short-film maker, and film maker. It's probably best to ask the arts hosts themselves about these.

British spelling is used throughout, for consistency. BTW Like everybody else, I make mistakes. If you see one, let me know!

  is whatever name you'd like to be known by. It is recommended that you use your first name only, as per AirBnB's format.
• Host's town
  is the nearest town. This will be used to index the directory, and is intended to give prospective guests an idea of where you are.
• Host's email
  address will be used only for managing this directory. It will not be displayed in the directory. nor will I pass it on to anyone else, or use it for spam.
• AirBnB ID
  is the number that appears in the URL for your AirBnB profile page. For example, my profile is "https://www.airbnb.co.uk/users/show/1180385", so my AirBnB ID is "1180385". Just view your own profile, and you will see your ID, then copy it into the 'AirBnB ID' field below.
• Creative activity
  is what you are actively doing in the arts. It can be professional or amateur. You can see examples in the directory above. Maximum 280 characters. You may include a link to art web site if you have none. (Please do not include links to non-AirBnB rental sites.)
• Contact
  gives a rough indication of how much contact you will normally have with your guests. The possible options are: None: this usually means you have someone else managing the property. Minimal: for example meet & greet - you will probably see the guest only when they arrive and when they leave. Occasional: probably you are living in a separate part of the building, or next door, and you will bump into the guests from time to time as neighbours. Frequent: probably you are sharing the living space with the guest and you will meet once or more times each day. Structured: you offer structured activities such as art classes, or use of a studio space.
